WORK BY ALBY FALZON
Java Boy
By the early 1990s, Bali’s status as a global surf destination had been cemented. What was once remote had become a hub of international surf culture, with crowded breaks, regular contests, and surfing entering a new phase of commercialisation. It was within this shift that Albert Falzon set out to create something different.
Albe moved away from conventional surf film formats and leaned into something more abstract, fun, psychedelic and exciting. One of its most striking moments is Java Boy — a young Javanese boy standing with his horse, a surfboard attached, set against Mount Bromo in East Java. To Albe’s surprise, later that night the same boy walked into the restaurant carrying the same board that had been cast into the volcano.
